Doru lineare (Dermaptera: Forficulidae), a beneficial insect inhabiting corn crops in Northern Argentina: alimentary preferences and consumption rates | Doru lineare (Dermaptera: Forficulidae), insecto benéfico en cultivos de maíz del norte argentino: preferencias alimenticias y tasas de consumo

Spanish; Castilian. Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) es una importante plaga de cultivos en América, y en el Norte Argentino es considerada plaga clave del maíz (Zea mays L.). Doru lineare (Eschs.) es un insecto omnívoro integrante frecuente de la entomofauna del agroecosistema "maíz" en dicha región. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el potencial comportamiento depredador de D. lineare frente a S. frugiperda. Para ello, se evaluó la preferencia alimenticia de la tijereta frente a diversos componentes del maíz y larvas o huevos de S. frugiperda, y se cuantificó el consumo de huevos por parte de sus estadios ninfales. Al ser evaluados exclusivamente como fitófagos, ambos sexos de la tijereta prefirieron ingerir polen por sobre granos de maíz en estado lechoso, y no se detectó consumo de hojas. Al valorarse como entomófagos, los adultos consumieron indistintamente cantidades similares de huevos y larvas neonatas de la plaga. Al enfrentar polen de maíz con huevos, la tendencia fue significativamente sesgada a un mayor consumo de este último nutriente, sin encontrarse diferencias en el comportamiento entre sexos. La duración media del ciclo ninfal de D. lineare fue de 26,9 días, y en su transcurso (4 estadios) consumen una media de 438,56 huevos de S. frugiperda, con una tasa promedio diaria de 15,2 huevos. Se concluye que, ante la presencia conjunta de nutrientes de origen vegetal y animal, D. lineare muestra una tendencia a comportarse como depredador, consumiendo un importante número de huevos de S. frugiperda; por lo tanto, D. lineare es un organismo que debe ser tenido en cuenta al momento de planificar el manejo integrado de plagas del cultivo de maíz en el norte argentino.

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith), is considered one of the most important pest affecting cornfields in almost all tropical America, being considered the key-pest for northern Argentina maize crops. The omnivorous Doru lineare is one of the most abundant insect inhabiting maize agro-ecosystems in the region. The aim of this contribution was to evaluate the alimentary preferences of the earwig when was exposed to different nutritional sources like maize components and/or FAW eggs or larvae. When the earwig where evaluated exclusively as a phytophagous insect, they showed a marked preference for pollen consumption. Both males and females consumed significantly more corn pollen than milky corn grains, meanwhile leaf utilization were not verified. In another experiment D. lineare was evaluated as FAW predator, where adults consumed equally eggs and newly emerged larvae. Finally, when the earwigs were confronted with corn pollen and FAW eggs, adults consumed significantly more eggs, and this behavior did not show differences between sexes. The duration of the nymph state was of 26.9 days. The consumption average of a neonate nymph until reaching the adult state was of 438.56 eggs and no differences were recorder between sexes. These results allow establishing that, given the important number of consumed pest eggs, D. lineare is an organism that must be considered at the time of planning the integrated pest management in corn crops in northern Argentina.
