Adequacy of light intensity in selected work areas and measures to regulate it in urban Punjab

Present study was conducted to assess (both subjectively and objectively) and determine the adequacy of light intensity in selected work areas with the objective to device measures to regulate it in urban Punjab. Results of the study indicated that Non-significant differences were found in both subjective and objective assessment of light intensity between approved and unapproved localities for doing selected tasks viz. writing, reading, cooking, dressing and ironing except for doing leisure reading in bed where it was found to be significantly different between approved and unapproved locality. Major suggestions as given by respondents from both the localities were: increased window area and its direction, using more energy efficient sources, regular cleaning of bulbs or tubes and all openings, use of light or reflecting colours, use of curtains, provision of sky tight, use of spot light and ceiling light etc. Findings of the study can be useful for architects In designing houses and other buildings and can also be helpful for the interior designers for determining adequacy of light both in terms of functional utility and decorative aspects. These findings may also help the families to adopt improved lighting conditions especially for task lighting to reduce physiological and mental strain on them.
