In the present study 35 genotypes of rice were evaluated for genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for yield and its component. This study revealed highly significant differences among the 35 genotypes for all the characters. A wide range of variation was observed for mean values of plant height, days to panicle initiation, days to 50 flowering, number of tillers per plant, number of panicles per plant, number of spikelets per panicle, panicle length, flag leaf length, flag leaf width. All the characters under study indicating the presence of ample variation of these characters. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance observed for plant height, number of tillers per plant, number of panicles per plant, number of spikelets per panicle and flag leaf length indicated the presence of additive gene action and direct selection may be highly effective.
