Prevalence of bovine tuberculosis and paratuberculosis in Punjab

A total of 626 animals (251 cows and 376 buffaloes) were tested for tuberculosis and Johne's disease using single intradermal test. Prevalence of tuberculosis(9.09) was found to be significantly higher(P0.01) than that of paratuberculosis(2.71). Species wise, not much difference was found in the prevalence of disease in cattle and buffalo.Prevalence of both the disesses was positively correlated with the age of the animal. Prevalence of TB was significantly higher (P0.01) in females of both the species (10.76) thann males (1.72) of their species. Similarly prevalence of JD was higher (P0.01) in females(3.13) than their counterparts (0.86) of both the species. Out of total 17 JD positive animals acid-fast bacilli could be demonstrated only on three samples.
