Thiamine responsive polioencephalomalacia in buffalo calves

Polioencephalomalacia (PEM) or cerebrocortical necrosis (CCN) or forage poisoning occurs sporadically in cattle, sheep and pigs. Young rapidly growing animals are more prone. The condition developes in animals on high grain intake or high level of mollasses or sulphate in diet or feeding on plants containing thiaminase enzyme. Due to paucity of reports from this area, cases of seven buffalo calves showing PEM like signs, treated successfully with thiamine are placed on record in the present report.
