Effect of nitrogen and thiourea on dry matter accumulation and nitrogen use efficiency of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. Emend stuntz)

A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Farm, S. K. N. College of Agriculture, Jobner to study the response of pearl millet to nitrogen and thiourea. The treatments consisted of four levels of nitrogen (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg N/ha) and five levels of thiourea application [control, seed soaking (500 ppm), foliar spray (1000 ppm), seed soaking plus foliar 'spray and foliar spray of urea]. Results showed that dry matter accumulation, stover yield, nitrogen concentration in straw and phosphorus concentration in both grain and stover increased significantly with the application of 90 kg N/ha over the lower levels. Whereas chlorophyll content, grain yield, nitrogen content in grain and total uptake of nitrogen increased upto 60 kg N/ha. The nitrogen use efficiency decreased with the increasing levels of nitrogen supply. Seed soaking with thiourea prior to sowing followed by foliar spray proved superior to all other modes with respect to each criteria used for treatment evaluation.
