Breeding of sugar beet root shape plays an important role in reducing harvest and post- harvest losses because breaking tail and transported soil by sugar beet roots are causes of pathogenesis in the field and storage. This experiment was conducted in 2006 in the Karaj region in order to transfer the round and smooth properties of fodder beet to sugar beet. The experimental design was a split plot factorial in RCBD with four replications. The samples were chosen of 28 clamps of sugar beet derived from back cross between a line with round shape and a line with high technological quality. Root yield, sugar content, nitrogen, sodium, potassium, ratio of sodium to potassium, ratio of potassium to sugar content, ratio of nitrogen to sugar content, alkalinity coefficient, white sugar yield, molassed sugar, white sugar content, sugar yield and extraction coefficient of sugar in samples were determined. The results showed that conical – smooth and round – smooth roots were dominate in the clamps. Then, this selection method may be recommended to maximizethe proporation of round and smooth sugar beet shape. With respect to root yield, white sugar yield and round property, the lines: 261* (MS261*MSNB1*W-1003), 231* N.O 6 white root and 261* N.O 6 with white root were chosen which could be used in the future breeding programs.
