Revision of the semidetailed soil survey and Study of land suitability classification for major field crops in Saadat Shar Plain (Fars Province)

The Saadat-shahr Plain is located in north east of Shiraz with 12460 hectars. This plain was studied as&rdquosemidetailed soil survey and land classification for irrigation&rdquoin 1991. This study was done in 2000. The mean annual percipitation is 343mm. Therefore this area is classified as semiarid region with xeric moisture and thermic temprature regimes. According to climatic data, short growth period (135 day) is the main limiting factor for dryland farming. Farmers need do complementary irrigation at the end of growing season otherwise thay will face a reduction in yield. Entisols, Inceptisols and Alfisols were recognized as soil orders in the area based on Soil Taxonomy 1998. This plain has 4 great groups, 6 subgroups 7 soil series,and 27 phases. For different phases, land suitability classes were determined for wheat, barley, maize and sugarbeet with parametric method (square root method). Generally soils on alluvio colluvial fans (Hassanabad soil series) are unsuitable for irrigated wheat, barley, maize and sugarbeet due to great amount of gravels & lime. Soils on upper terraces(Rahmatabad soil series) are suitable for major crops but (Doulatabad soil series) are moderatly suitable. Kamin soil series are moderatly suitable for major crops, Ghasrodasht soil series are suitable but Bakan soil series are marginally suitable. Akbarabad soil series on low lands are unsuitable to marginally suitable. Usually by levelling, stone picking and other improvement works suitability classes get better for crop productions in the study area.
