Butachlor, which is called here butachlor-on, is being recently produced in the Institute of Iran Petroleum Industry. In the process of this production, a by-product is released which is called butachlor-off. To determine the effect of butachlor-off in enhancing herbicidal spectrum range of picloram, two field trails in 2005 and 2006, tank-mixed application of them, compared with a combination of butachlor-on and picloram, was studied. The herbicides were used as pre-emergence in a non-arable field. In the first year experiment, separate application of butachlor-off at 7.5 L ha-1, butachlor-on at 7.5 L ha-1, picloram at 15 L ha-1 and tank-mixed application of picloram with either butachlor-off or butachlor-on at different application rate resulted in significant reduction of canopy and frequency of the weeds. Separate application of butachlor-on at 7.5 L ha-1 and mixed application of butachlor-on and picloram respectively at 5.625 and 3.75 L ha-1 were more effective in control of Hordeum spp. than the other treatments. Application of picloram alone or combined with butachlor-off or butachlor-on, was more effective in control of Chenopodium album., Polygonum aviculare and other broad leaf weeds than the application of two latter herbicides separately. In the second year experiment in which butachlor-on was excluded, tank mixed application of butachlor-off and picloram respectively at 3.75 and 7.5 or 5.625 and 3.75 L ha-1 resulted in the lowest number of Setaria viridis. The efficacy of tank mixed of butaclor-ff and picloram respectively at 5.625 and 3.75 or 1.875 and 11.25 L ha-1 in control of braod leaf weeds was similar to alone application of picloram at 15 or 11.25 L ha-1. Taken together, butachlor-off and butachlor-on improved the efficacy of picloram in control of weeds.
