In the present study, radial variation of basic wood property and bending property of 55-year-old sugi trees were investigated to clarify the difference in bending property between juvenile wood (JW) and mature wood (MW) of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) originated from seedlings. Modulus of elasticity (MOE) gradually increased up to 25th annual ring from pith to bark and then showed almost constant value thereafter. A significant correlations were found between microfibril angle (MFA) and MOE in JW, and between air-dried density (AD) and MOE in MW. Modulus of rupture (MOR) showed almost constant values from pith to bark. In addition, there were significant correlations between AD and MOR in both JW and MW. Bending work gradually decreased up to 25th annual ring from pith and then showed almost constant values thereafter. On the other hand, a significant correlation coefficient was recognized between MFA and deflection in JW. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that MFA mainly influences on the bending property in JW, whereas AD mainly influences on the bending property in MW.
