The correlations between soil color components and physical and chemical properties of the sandy land of Horqin, China

This research was conducted in order to investigate the relationships between physical and chemical properties of soils and color component values specified by a* (red and green), b* (yellow and blue) and L* (brightness), at the northern part of Naiman province, in from the sandy area of Horqin, China. The soil samples were collected from 18 nodal points of about 5 km in mesh size. The type of land formations of those points were sand dune, bush, forest, upland crop, rice field, weedy land, and so on. At each point, three soil samples were collected from the surface layer (2.5-7.5cm), the middle layer (17.5-22.5cm), and the deep layer (37.5-42.5cm). Highly positive correlations were obtained between color components a* and b*, and the ratio of the soil grain size was greater than 0.02mm. Highly negative correlations were obtained between color components a* and b*, with highly negative correlations in the ratio of the soil grain size which was smaller than 0.02mm, the specific gravity, the organic matter content, the air dried moisture content, and EC. Multiple regression analysis was applied to estimate the physical and chemical properties of soils using the color component values. High regression coefficients were obtained for coarse and fine soil grain sizes, specific density, organic content, water content, and EC. However, there was no relationship between color component values and soil pH. The results show that it is possible to use the color components values for evaluating physical and chemical properties of soils.
