'The industrialization of maritime Asia and the world wheat trade'

In recent years, the economic growth of the maritime Asian countries has been remarkable. The purpose of this paper is to examine the economic growth of these maritime monsoon Asian countries from the viewpoint of food supply. It is well known that an increase in food supply leads to a shift in the labor force from the agricultural to the industrial sector. Based on our study, it is apparent that the basic structure of the world wheat trade has changed over the last half century. At the present time, the West is the main supplier of wheat, and the main importers are monsoon Asia. As a result the maritime monsoon Asian countries were able to shift their labor force from the agricultural to the industrial sector, and labor-intensive industrialization with cheap labor was achieved. In addition, in Japan of the 1960s, saving of the household budget by use of the low price Western wheat brought improvement in a savings rate, a level of education, and expansion of the domestic market of home electrical appliances. The same phenomenon as this is occurring in whole monsoon Asia, for example, South Korea in the 1960s, Malaysia in the 1980s, Thailand in the 1990s.
