New LA hybrid lily [Lilium] varieties 'Misty lady' and 'Royal snow'

'Misty Lady' and 'Royal Snow' are new lily varieties, which belong to LA hybrid group. They were selected from the hybrid progenies, acquired through ovule culture following the crosses by cut-style pollination method at Hokkaido Central Agricultural Experiment Station in 1997. The purpose of breeding was to develop the LA hybrid varieties having the superior bulb productivity and the variation of flower color by interspecific crosses using Lilium x formolongi and Asiatic hybrid cultivars as parents. The female parent of 'Misty Lady' was the LA hybrid '94LA191-16', which was obtained from the crosses between the L. x formolongi cultivar, 'White Lancer' and the reddish-purple Asiatic hybrid cultivar, 'Krete' and 'Krete' as male parent was backcrossed to the hybrid. 'Royal Snow' is the LA hybrid between 'White Lancer' and the white Asiatic hybrid cultivar, 'Alaska'. After 'Misty Lady' and 'Royal Snow' were examined as 'Saiiku No.4' and 'Saiiku No.12' respectively in 2004 and 2005, they were registered to Hokkaido government as the recommended varieties in 2006. The flowers of 'Misty Lady' are cup-shaped and reddish-purple in color with inconspicuous spots. The flower size is about 12 cm in diameter. The flowers of 'Royal Snow' are similar to an elegant lily in shape and white following pale green-yellow in early flowering. The flower size is about 17 cm. Both varieties are superior in the bulb propagation and production. When the bulblets produced by bulb scaling are planted to the field in spring, they grow up into the bulbs using for cut flower production.
