Preparation of soybean crude residue mixed silage and its effect on performance and carcass quality in fattening Berkshire pigs

A study was conducted on efficient utilization of soybean curd residue, an under utilized feed resource produced in Kumamoto Prefecture as a swine feed by ensiling it with wheat bran and its feeding effect on swine fattening. The soybean curd residue was mixed with wheat bran on a 1:1 ratio on fresh matter basis and ensiled. Chemical composition and fermentation quality of the freshly prepared material and after 28 days of fermentation were analyzed. A fattening experiment was conducted using Berkshire hog (4 heads) and maiden gilt (2 head). The experimental animals were divided into two groups, namely control group and experimental group. The control group animals were fed a commercial diet and those of experimental group were fed commercial diet and soybean curd residue mixed silage (SS) on a 1:1 ratio on dry matter (DM) basis. The parameters investigated were feed intake, digestibility of feed components, feed efficiency, weight gain, carcass quality, rib eye area and meat quality. As no significant difference was observed in chemical composition except nitrogen free extracts, it was considered that there was a little loss in composition of the ensiled materials. The pH of the ensiled silage was 4.32. The lactic acid, acetic acid and ammonia nitrogen content of the ensiled silage was 1.05%, 0.23% and 0.12%, respectively on the fresh matter basis. The palatability of the ensiled SS was good as there was no significant difference on the feed intake among the groups. The calculated DM digestibility of the silage was 72.1%. No significant difference in weight gain was observed between the two groups during the experimental period. The above results suggest that it is possible to use SS as a supplement feed for swine fattening.
