Applicability of the DNDC model for estimating greenhouse gas emissions from a Japanese rice paddy field

The DeNitrification-DeComposition (DNDC) model developed by Li and colleagues is a process-oriented simulation model for soil carbon and nitrogen biogeochemistry in agro-ecosystems to estimate greenhouse gas (nitrous oxide, methane, and carbon dioxide) emissions. This study used the DNDC model to assess the amount of nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) gases emitted from a rice paddy field in Japan during a flooding and draining period. The model-simulated results indicated that N2O and CH4 gas emissions were affected strongly by soil water content, and that the observed N2O gas flux agreed well with the modeled flux during the flooding period. Accordingly, this indicated that the model was valid for Japanese rice paddy fields, and will be helpful in developing water management strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the rice paddy fields. However, the model needs to be modified to more accurately predict water flow in soil because despite flooding conditions it did not predict that the soil would become saturated.
