We observed the numbers of follicles at different stages (primordial, primary, secondary, and antral follicles) in the ovary at superovulation and at different estrus cycles, which would influence the result of superovulation processing of the Holstein cows. The ovaries of animals that had undergone superovulation several weeks or 2 months ago (group A: n=4; group B: n=4) and the ovaries that contained the forming or the regressing luteal body (group C: n=4; group D: n=4) were collected. Five 3-mm sections from each ovary (10 sections per animal) were obtained, and the numbers of all primordial, primary, secondary and antral follicles in all 10 sections were counted. The number of each type of follicle was not significantly different between any groups. No particular tendency was noted in the number of each type of ovarian follicle with respect to the luteal body and cystic follicle. We found that the conditions applied in this study do not affect the follicles before the antral stage, and number of antral follicles is greater than that of small follicles. Hence, it was suggested that individual differences in the results of superovulation occurred after the antral stage.
