Epizootical analysis of current situation of Marek's disease and consideration on disease control in Japan

This review described the prevalence of Marek's disease (MD) and essential points for control of MD in Japan. Annual statistical data on chicken meat inspection published by the Ministry of Welfare and Labour indicated that 0.5 to 1.0 million chickens each year from 1993 to 2001 were condemned as MD-infected by inspectors at poultry processing plants. This was equivalent to 7 to 16% of the total number of condemned chickens. However, the number of chickens affected with MD decreased rapidly after 2002 and fell below 1% in 2004. Approximately the same tendency was confirmed in annual statistics of animal infectious diseases published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery. Two factors, practice of strict biosecurity and correct vaccination by an in-ovo vaccinator, were considered as possibly decreasing the number of chickens affected with MD. From the epizootical point of view, MD is considered to be almost under control. However, it recently has been noticed that MD cases on broiler farms managed by old style hygienic practice are increasing. Therefore, there is concern that the number of condemned MD chickens on such broiler farms may increase.
