The effects of shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes) strains and culture conditions on the digestibility improvement of sugarcane bagasse was investigated. In experiment 1, bagasse was cultured with 4 strains, K, IFO 6654, USP (No. 456) and TMI-1256, at 26degC for 8 weeks. In experiment 2, bagasse and rice bran (9 : 1) substrates were cultured with the USP strain at 26degC for 4 weeks, and thereafter cultured at 25 or 30degC for 4 weeks. In experiment 3, bagasse and rice bran substrates were cultured with the TMI strain at 28degC for 8 or 12 weeks, and at 28degC and 32degC for 4 weeks. In experiment 1, the values of in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) of bagasse cultured with USP or TMI was higher than the values of K or IFO (P0.05). The lignin content in bagasse cultured with TMI was the lowest among the 4 strains. In experiment 2, there was no difference on the IVOMD values of those cultured at 25degC and 30degC and the in vitro gas production (IVGP) during 48 h incubation of the substrate cultured with USP. However, the value of IVGP incubated for 24h and in vitro NDF digestibility (IVNDFD) of the substrate cultured at 30degC were higher than the value at 25degC (P0.05). In experiment 3, IVOMD, IVGP incubated for 48rate cultured with TMI at 28degC for 12 weeks were higher than the value of 8 weeks incubation (P0.05). However, there was no difference between the culture temperatures with IVOMD, IVGP at 48h and IVNDFD of the substrate cultured for 8 weeks. The best result was obtained using the USP strain at 26degC and 30degC for 4 weeks.
