Development and environmental problem in Okinawa [Japan]

Okinawa, part of the Ryukyu archipelago, is the only prefecture of Japan that lies entirely in the subtropical oceanic climatic zone. The Ryukyu archipelago encompasses more than 160 islands, with only 41 being inhabited. Due to the abundant flora and fauna which can be found there, the Ryukyu archipelago has often been called the 'Galapagos of the Orient.' The small islands such as those in the Ryukyu archipelago have very fragile ecosystem which were damaged during the development and growth of Okinawa following the conversion of power back to Japan from the United States in 1972. In the developmental process, no one knows how to protect the environment. For that reason, we must find a way to protect the fragile ecosystems of Okinawa in order to promote harmony between growth and development and environmental conservation. In order to optimize Okinawan potential for development, we must learn more about Okinawan history, culture and tradition. Therefore, it is requested that the process of development be reviewed and that collaboration between the natural and social sciences occur in order to better understand the ecosystems, social system and culture of Okinawa.
