Influence of ground water level on carrot [Daucus carota] growth in solid substrate culture system

The influences of ground water level on water status of root media and carrot growth were investigated using a subirrigation solid substrate culture system where the ground water level was maintained constant. Plants were grown under groundwater level (GWL) of -8 cm and -15 cm in a phytotron glass room controlled at an air temperature of 23degC and a relative humidity of 70%. Water content at different levels was monitored using time domain reflectometry (TDR), where TDR probes were horizontally placed at -2 and -4 cm below the media surface for GWL = -8 cm, and -2, -4, and -6 cm for GWL = -15 cm. The values of water content observed were nearly constant during the cultivation, while the water content was higher for closer to ground water table. At the identical level, the water content was kept higher for GWL = -8 cm than for GWL = -15 cm. Yield of storage root was relatively higher in GWL = -15 cm. Thickening of storage root was inhibited in high water content media that was nearly saturated, and then storage roots for GWL = -8 cm became significantly shorter than those for GWL = -15 cm.
