Control of bacterial wilt on eggplant during hydroponic cultivation

This study investigated sterilization techniques for culture beds infested with Ralstonia solanacearum and the utilization of silver-coated cloth against bacterial wilt for hydroponically cultivated eggplant. Within a rockwool bed dried using the solar heating sterilization method temperatures were likely to rise to higher levels than in beds which remained wet. Accordingly, solar heating sterilization of culture beds was effective against bacterial wilt. The disease was also controlled completely by fumigation using chloropicrin and solar drying of the culture bed. R. solanacearum was not detected 1 min after adding the bacterial solution into hydroponic solution containing the silver-coated cloth. However, this sterile effect was lost when a used piece of rockwool was added to the treated solution. A secondary infection of the disease was not controlled for eggplants cultured in hydroponic solution containing the silver-coated cloth. Inoculating the bacterium into a tank supplying silver treated hydroponic solution resulted in delayed disease development. However, the final disease severity was the same as for plants grown with the non-treated control.
