Growth of 0 and 1 year old yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata reared using the self-feeding method in net pens

The growth performances of both 0 and 1 year old yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata, reared using EP pellets under self-feeding condition in floating pens were investigated. Two groups of 0 year old yellowtail (50 individuals each, mean initial body weight 69.4 g) were kept in two experimental pens (2 x 3 x 4 m deep), and fed under ad libitum self-feeding condition. They grew to 1155.8 g after five months. The feed efficiency and specific growth rate throughout the rearing periods were 54.4% and 1.60%, respectively. Two groups of 1 year old yellowtail (44 and 45 individuals each, mean initial body weight 849.6 g) were similarly kept in net pens (3 x 3.5 x 4 m deep), and ad libitum self-feeding condition. They grew to 3603.3 g after eight months. The feed efficiency and specific growth rate were 53.6% and 0.56%, respectively. These results of growth performance under self-feeding condition were almost equivalent to those already reported under hand and machinery feeding condition. Thus, yellowtail are able to take to apparent satiation levels under self-feeding conditions and the self-feeding method can be adopted as a new feeding technology for yellowtail culture.
