Influence of a second crop plucking and subsequent trimming on canopy structure in autumn and on the first crop of subsequent year for mature tea (Camellia sinensis L.) bush

I performed 3 experiments at Shizuoka Tea Experiment Station to study the influence of trimming after the plucking of a second crop on the canopy structure in autumn and on the first crop of the subsequent year. Almost all my data revealed that the trimming reduced the number of new shoots but increased the weight of 100 new shoots in the first crop of the subsequent year. However, low trimming after late plucking of a second crop with a large yield remarkably reduced the tea canopy biomass and the number of buds on the skiffing surface in autumn, and it often led to a low yield in the first crop of the subsequent year. An excessively high yield in the second crop and low trimming might induce poor reverse of shoot growth in summer. A combination of low trimming and high skiffing in autumn delayed the growth of new shoots and reduced the free amino acid concentrations in new shoots in the first crop of the subsequent year. These results can be extrapolated for the main temperate zone of Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
