Ferret with orbital adenocarcinoma acompanied by exophthalmos

A four-year-old spayed domestic ferret was referred to the Veterinary Medical Center at the University of Tokyo for exophthalmos of the left eye. Based on clinical signs and laboratory findings, the exophthalmos was caused by the orbital mass. Enucleation and orbital exenteration were performed. On immunohistochemistry, the tissue showed pan keratin and NSE positive, and vimentin and desmin negative, and the tumor was therefore estimated to be epithelial in origin. However, the origin of the tumor cells was not confirmed. The ferret died six months later, and a necropsy was performed. Based on the histology, the mass was diagnosed as orbital adenocarcinoma.
