Census of marine life at continental margin ecosystems (COMARGE): Overview and case study in Japan

COMARGE (Continental Margin Ecosystems on a World wide Scale) is one of field projects for Census of Marine Life Program. The project tries to describe richness, diversity and distribution of different habitats at continental margin. Open slope sediment bottom, canyon, hot and cold seepages, and oxygen minimum zone are counted as habitats at continental margin. Data integration and synthesis are made through series of workshops. They are habitat mappings, worldwide distributions, habitat heterogeneity and human impacts. In this review, we have overviewed present activity of the project and its relationships to Japan.
