Relationship between rearing using natural sea plankton and deformity of the inter-nostril epidermis in larvae and juveniles of red sea bream Pagrus major

In 2002 and 2003, red sea bream Pagrus major were artificially reared using natural sea plankton. Total number of juveniles that survived in the two years was only 26 specimens. All of these had the normal nostrils. In 2008, larvae given only natural sea plankton were soon died. So, about 2,000 specimens initially given rotifers, until an average 5.0 mm in total length, were transferred to the natural sea plankton tank. A total of 160 specimens (6.7-21.0 mm TL) survived and some showed II and III stage deformities of the inter-nostril epidermis. Thirty six percentages of 10-14 mm TL specimens had abnormal inter-nostril epidermis. These results suggest that larvae fed natural sea plankton from first-feeding stage had normal nostrils, however, when initially fed rotifers (until about 5 mm TL) and subsequently natural sea plankton, some specimens developed abnormal nostrils.
