Islet cell tumor in a cat

A 16-year-old, castrated, male Japanese domestic cat presented with walking difficulties, while dysstasia and convulsive seizure were noted nine days after the first examination. Blood glucose had decreased severely (32 mg/dl) over this period. An insulinoma was suspected clinically, and diagnosis of an islet cell tumor was made based on histopathologic examinations of an excised pancreatic mass by exploratory laparotomy. Congo redstained sections revealed amyloid deposits within the tumor stroma. Tumor cells had immunoreactivity to chromogranin A and no immunoreactivity to insulin. Ultrastructurally, tumor cells contained secretory granules of various sizes that ranged from 100 nm to 250 nm in diameter. Typical beta granules with bar-shaped internal cores and submembranous halos were rarely observed, and many secretory granules had an atypical appearance as electrondense spherical granules.
