Resistance to herbicide was the first trait to be introduced into crop plants using new genetic approaches for a number of technical and practical reasons. The agronomic importance of herbicides is a major driving force behind the development of herbicide resistant plants. Insertion of herbicide resistant gene allows selective control of production of weeds in rice cropping systems. This study was conducted to investigate the major characteristics of genetically modified elite rice, Iksan483, compared to a non-transgenic rice varieties. The herbicide, glufosinate, resistant transgenic elite rice Iksan483 showed similar phenotypic traits compared to a non-transgenic rice variety Shindongjinbyeo and Anjungbyeo. Heading date and culm length of Iksan483 were same with Shindongjinbyeo, but slightly earlier and shorter in Anjungbyeo. In panicle length of Iksan483 was shorter than Shindongjinbyeo and Anjungbyeo. In yield components and yield, Iksan483 was inferior except for percentage of ripened grain and yield index showed 88% to Shindongjinbyeo. Grain apparent traits of Iksan483 showed shorter grain type than Shindongjinbyeo and same with Anjungbyeo. There is no white core and belly grain in Iksan483 as Anjungbyeo. In grain quality traits, contents of amylose and protein of Iksan483 was slightly high compared with Shindongjinbyeo, but Toyo meter showed low index. In the test of leaf blast and bacterial leaf blast, leaf stripe virus resistance in Iksan483 showed similar resistance with Shindongbyeo and Anjungbyeo.
