The paper deals with the motives and their types as well as factors which influence the choice of a professional career. Based on the students' reflexions on the Clothing Design program, the motives for choosing the program have been identified, the students' opinions about support and strengthening of the motives for university studies have been analysed and a link between professional motivation and career opportunities has been revealed. 32 students of the Clothing design program at Šiauliai University, participated in this qualitative research. The content analysis of the students' written reflections on the program has revealed their strong inner motives a well as their critical attitude towards the study program and the studies themselves as well as their focussed determination towards their chosen profession. The respondents' reflections on the career perspectives have proved the stability of the students' career choices despite the current situation of the studies system and the socio-cultural context.
