Transgenic tobacco plants were analyzed in vitro and in vivo for tolerance to Basta herbicide and inheritance of basta gene responsible for resistance to this herbicide. The T1 progeny from T0 plants, transformed via Agrobacterium system, were tested. Transgenic plants were identified by their ability to germinate and grow on Basta medium. The tolerance to Basta varied among the plants from different lines. The present study has demonstrated Mendelian inheritance of basta gene (the ratio of segregation was 3:1) at the majority of lines where the segregation ratio was non-Mendelian. Plant resistance to the application of Basta, and segregation analysis indicated that a functional basta gene had integrated into the tobacco genome and was inherited in a Mendelian fashion by the progeny.
