Yield of clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.) in dependence on the cultivation technology
2006
Musteata, G. | Cretu, A.
The results of a comparison study of different cultivation techniques of Salvia sclarea are presented in this paper. The experiment was conducted in three variants: 1)control (traditional technique); 2) alternative technique with tillage; 3) alternative technique with no tillage. The traditional technique is costly, requires great expenses of manpower and materials in the first vegetation year, when the sage, as a biennial crop, does not give yields economically satisfactory. The alternative technique consists in excluding the hand labours from clary sage management system in the first vegetation year and substituting the herbicides by repeated weed mowing. Thus, conditions similar to those of wild flora are created. The alternative technique ensure by the end of the first vegetation year a density of 29-36 plants/square m, which is sufficient for the formation of a high yield of raw material. The quality of the raw material obtained with the alternative technique does not differ from the traditional one and even is superior. The greatest yield of essential oil (32,3kg/ha) was obtained in the variant with tillage and 90 kg N/ha nitrogen application. It was 38 percent more than in the control. In both variants (with tillage and no-tillage), if nitrogen fertilizers are applied in the second vegetation year, a good harvest can be obtained with reduced expenses of manpower and materials.
