Two consecutive phases of modification of plant leaves water status under cold action

Under controlled conditions imitating late spring cold weather and frosts, the water status of grapevine leaves in early stage of intensive shoot growth, as well as of soybean leaves as a model system, has been investigated. Two phases of modification of water status under low temperature stress were established. Within the limits of plant tolerance, the action of low temperature leads to the increase of water content in tissues at the expense of free water located in apoplast and vacuoles, whereas in cytoplasm a decrease of water content occurrs. In the range of the temperatures causing damage, total water, including free water, decreases in symplast, this being probably conditioned by the deterioration of the integrity of limiting cell membranes. The peculiarities of water status of leaves in relation to their genotypic and phenotypic resistance to low temperature stress are dicussed.
