Reproduction biology of the mealybug parasitoid Coccidoxenoides perminutus

The biological properties of Coccidoxenoides perminutus related to its reproduction and performance as biocontrol agent were quantified. C. perminutus is confirmed to be almost entirely the lytokous, with males sporadically produced at very low frequency. The females have high reproductive potential, with full complement of eggs within a short time after emergence. The females deposit an average of 239 eggs during their lifetime, after a short pre-oviposition period of 12 hrs. The wasp deposits most eggs into second instar host insects and most of these eggs develop successfully into adults. Parasitoid eggs deposited into reproducing mealy bugs did not persist and were presumed encapsulated.
