Modern corn cultivation technology transfer in Caraga Region [Philippines]

The project aims to improve the productivity and achieve sustainable productiion of quality corn in Caraga Region through the extension of modern cultivation techniques and introduction of hybrid corn varieties. Initially, varietal testing was conduted in Butuan City. In season 1, Taiwan yellow corn hybrids (TN-20, TNG-1), local hybrids (GSI-40), improved OPV (USM Var 12) and Tiniguib were evaluated to determine the growth and yield performance. In season 2, Taiwan yellow corn hybrids (TN-20, TNG-1, PGH 95-5) and white corn hybrids (PGH 9501-1 and PWX 90-3) were evaluated together with the commonly planted yellow corn hybrids in the locality (Dekalb 9051) and white corn hybrid (Pioneer 30W30). In season 1, the varieties/hybrids differed significantly in plant height, days to tasseling and silking, ear placement and days to maturity. All varieties/hybrids were prolific. Producing 2 or more ears per plant. The yield differed significantly among varieties, with TN-20 yielding the highest, followed by GSI-40. Tiniguib yielded the lowest yield although not statistically different from TNG-1 in the July planting. In the August planting, only the OPV showed significantly lower yield. In season 2, the hybrids differed in many growth and yield characteristics. PWX 90-3, TNG-1, and PGH 95-5 tasseled and produced silk early, while the rest were the late bloomers. All hybrids from Taiwan showed early maturity than those already commercially available in Caraga Region. The yield of Dekalb was the highest, although its number of kernel rows per ear did not vary significantly from TNG-1, TN-20 and PGH-95-5. All hybrids were prolific but PGH 95-5 and PGH 9501-1 produced the most number of ears per plant.
