Effect of NPK on the growth and yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crop

The soil of experimental area was silty clay loam in texture, no saline (EC 0.37-0.33 dSm-1) at upper and lower depths, moderately alkaline in reaction (pH 7.63 and 7.97) at both depths, poor in organic matter (0.84% at 0-15 cm and 0.63% at 15-30 cm), high in calcium carbonate (16.30% at 0-15 cm and 16.42% at 15-30 cm) and total nitrogen (0.05% at 0-15 and 0.04% at 15-30 cm) respectively. The available phosphorous (2.68 and 1.70 mg per kg) was low and exchangeable potassium (184.91 and 168.25 mg per kg) at 0-15 and 15-30 cm depths was high. The soil after harvesting of crop was analyzed for NPK and it was observed that the nitrogen was same as was before cultivation of crop but the soil was little increased in phosphorus and potassium. The effect of NPK on plant height (cm) at maturity, ear-head length (cm), at maturity number of productive tillers per plant, number of grains of mother-head per plant, seed index (g), straw yield kg per ha, grain yield kg per ha was highly significant at P 0.05 level of significant by LSD. The NPK application @ 168-84-50 kg per ha significantly increased the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content in plant (straw and grain). Data regarding Value Cost Ratio (VCR) was higher in case of NP application @ 168-84-50 kg per ha than NPK application @ 168-84-50 kg per ha while lower VCR was determined with only N application a 168kg per ha. From the above findings it is concluded that combined application of NPK @ 168-84-50 kg per ha though produced high yield of grain and straw but was not economical.
