Micronutrients uptake and yield response of wheat under saline irrigation

This research indicates that the saline waters had adverse effects on soil properties, micro-nutrients content, growth and yield of Sarsabz wheat variety, especially at sensitive (early) growth stage. Key points observed includes that saline waters especially at high (4 dSm-1) and very high (5 dSm-1) EC, levels altered the EC, SAR and ESP of original soil. Saline waters with high (4 dSm-1) and very high (5 dSm-1) ECiw levels applied at early and all growth stages had more detrimental effect on plants. Plants irrigated with saline waters particularly at early and all growth stages were shorter in height and lighter in weight with fewer spike-lets and grains in their spikes, hence they produced lower grain and straw yields. Plants irrigated with saline waters particularly at early and all growth stages had higher Na+ and Cl- but lower K+ and K+/Na+ ratio in flag leaf sap, grains and straw. Plants irrigated with saline waters particularly at early and all growth stages had lower Zn2+, Cu2+, Mn2+ and Fe2+ in their grains and straw. It is concluded from this study that the saline waters with low and moderate salinity can be used as a substitute of good quality water to irrigate wheat at later (tolerant) growth stage.
