Biofortification of rice is a cost-effective way to address malnutrition in Asia. Strategies using transgenics to increase dietary intake of essential nutrients in rice are currently being evaluated. Transgenic plants with ferritin genes (iron storage protein) either from soybean or rice have been produced. Introgression of genes for Beta-carotene from transgenic japonica varieties into popular indica Asian varieties has been made using conventional breeding and marker aided backcrossing. A study on the possibility of increasing the lysine content of rice endosperm by introducing lysine dihydrodipicolinate synthase (DHPS) gene from Corynebacterium is currently underway. Development and recent progress is discussed.
