Persistence of nematode parasite in fishes of Arabian Sea and their relation with heavy metals

This study investigates the impact of long-term metal contamination in the fishes by oil / industrial pollution of Arabian Sea. The persistence of nematode parasites and heavy metals found in five common herbivorous and carnivorous fishes, found in Arabian Sea is examined. Heavy toxic metals were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and nematodes were collected from the muscles, gills and liver of fishes by dissection. The food content found in guts of herbivorous fishes consist of phytoplankton, diatoms, dinoflagellates mud along with nematode parasites whereas guts of carnivorous fishes contains small fishes, sepia, prawn and different species of nematodes. Fishes get infected due to the presence of nematode parasites and heavy metals which may be attributed with pollution of Arabian Sea caused by i) oil spreading in 2003 by Tasman Sprit at Karachi Clifton beach and ii) industrial wastes containing high percentages of heavy metals. These infected fish can cause serious diseases in human beings, which may in turn affect the fisheries product sale by lowering it day-by-day. These fishes commonly supplied to Karachi city may be toxic to human health.
