Self-incompatibility and bud age for seed setting in S1-lines of head cabbage

The experiment was conducted to know the bud age for maximum seed setting and appearance of self-incompatibility mechanism through heterogamic bud pollination. For this purpose, four self-incompatible (S1) inbred lines of early and mid season cabbage ( DT-46, E-34, VB-4PE-1 and B-21PE-3) were selected and bud pollination was done by taking 15 buds starting from newly opened flowers in sequence from older to younger. It was noted that inbred lines differed significantly in seed setting with respect to appearance of self-incompatible alleles. Amongst all parental lines, very weak self-incompatibility was observed in mid season inbred line VB-4PE-1 where seed setting started from 2nd bud. In other inbred lines, the seed setting started from 6th (B-21PE-3), 5th (DT-46) and 9th (E-34) bud. Less seed setting in second mid season inbred line (B-21PE-3) was observed as compared to VB-4PE-1. From early season inbred lines, higher seed setting was noted in DT-46 as compared to E-34. Maximum seed setting in line E-34 was noted in younger most bud 15th in sequence (9.15seeds/pod). It has been concluded that on heterogamic bud pollination, the self-incompatibility mechanism appears actively in older buds which results in decrease of seed setting. The optimum seed setting zone was noted from 9th to 15th bud with out prevalence of self-incompatibility mechanism.
