Evaluating the rice germplasm for oryzanol and octacosanol content in grains

The oryzanol in rice grains is made up of 10 components including 7-stigmastenyl ferulate, cycloartenyl ferulate, 24-methylene cycloartanyl ferulate and campesteryl ferulate. Octoconasol is a high-molecular weight, long-chained primary aliphatic alcohol having 28 carbons. It is the main component of natural wax extracted from plants and has several vital uses and activities such as cholesterol-lowering effects, anti-aggregatory properties, cytoprotective use, and ergogenic properties. In the present study, the authors evaluated total oryzanol and octoconasol contents in 305 and 274 rice accessions using HPLC and gas chromatography, respectively. The total oryzanol contents in all 305 accessions ranged from 0.69 to 51.40 mg 100g-l with a mean value of 12.46 mg 100g-l against 7.26 mg 100g-l from the check (Chucheongbyeo). There were high oryzanol contents (20mg 100g-l) in 21 accessions including Heugmok, Nado and Chosun. The octaconasol contents in 274 accessions were ranging from 0.78 to 6.06 mg 100g-l with a mean value of 2.40 mg 100g-l against 1.69 mg 100g-l from the check (Chucheongbyeo). Only 11 accessions including Heugmok, Baekcokna, Baeksuk, and Dangdo were found to have high contents (4 mg 100g-l)
