Dengue mosquito ovitrapping and preventive fogging trials in the Philippines

The usefulness and sensitivity of the ovitrap technique in monitoring Aedes population density was investigated in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. The effect of space spraying through thermal fogging on the Aedes population density was also determined. The ovitrap technique made use of 370-ml empty milk tin can painted black inside and outside, with a paddle made of lawanit measuring 1 x 6 inches, serving as an oviposition substrate. Ovitrap density index served as the indicator of Aedes population density. Thermal fogging operation utilized a PULSFOG machine loaded with a water-based pyrethroid, Aqua-Resigen. Thermal fogging operations were done during the pre-dengue outbreak season. Results showed that Aedes adults were present all year round in the study sites. Thermal fogging was able to sustainably reduce Aedes density by 45-65%. Results also showed that ovitrapping is a sensitive, simple and practical tool for detecting and monitoring Aedes population density.
