The paper presents the possibilities of irrigation with domestic wastewater at short rotation willow plantations (SRP) as a tertiary step of wastewater treatment. A case study from the Ner river valley is presented. In the past, application of wastewater during the vegetation period promoted uptake of nutrients by biomass, resulting in a production of 11-13 Mg of hay per hectare per year. By grassland irrigation more than 1.300 Mg of nitrogen and about 200 Mg of phosphorus was removed from the system with the annual yield of 60.000 Mg. Irrigation with wastewater played an important role in the removal of contaminants from wastewater, that resulted in decreasing pollution of the river Ner, also as an adverse effect, by the contamination of soil with nutrients and heavy metals
