Molecular and biometrical methods to study inheritance of seed size, shape and quality in hazelnut (Corylus Avellana L.)

Research on hazelnut seed quality has been limited until recently by our incomplete knowledge of the seeds' metabolite profile and content and the lack of suitable methods for an in-depth molecular analysis of the seed genotype. In this study, a comprehensive study on the application of different analytical, molecular and biometrical methods on hazelnut seeds for the assessment of metabolite content inheritance and seed molecular genotyping was performed and reported. The material used consisted of parental plants and offspring from controlled pollination among Italian hazelnut accessions 'Tonda Gentile Romana' (TGR), 'Tonda di Giffoni (TG1F), 'Nocchione' (NOC) and 'Wild' type. The application of new methods for accelerating hazelnut clonal selection and varietal diversification would probably increase the availability of novel, better adapted, disease-resistant and more productive hazelnut cultivars that maintain high quality fruit standards. It would also promote hazelnut production and even change farmer's habit of insisting on unsustainable growth of certain traditional landraces as female or male parents over large areas.
