Effect of cadmium on the quality of tomato fruits and their nutritional status

In 2001, in the Experimental Farm Poznan-Marcelin (Poland), a green house experiment was carried out. Its purpose was to define the effect of increasing doses of cadmium on the yield and quality of tomato fruits (Fontana cultivar) and on the status of their nutrition. Increasing doses of cadmium (in the range of 0-50 mg/cubic dm of substratum) had no effect on fruit yield. They caused a decrease of general acidity and saccharose content, decreased level of fructose and glucose, decreased chlorophyll index, increased vitamin C value in fresh fruits. Fruits collected from combination with an addition of cadmium contained more total nitrogen (I cluster) phosphorus (I and III cluster), potassium (I and III cluster) and magnesium (I and III cluster). Increasing doses of cadmium caused an increased cadmium content in fruits (I and III cluster). Fruits collected from the combination with cadmium addition contained more manganese and copper than control fruits
