It is known that celery contains furanocoumarins, a group of photomutagenic and photocarcinogenic substances. Eighteen cultivars of celeriac (Jablkowy, Odrzanski, Makar, Brilliant, Diamant, Gol, Luna, Mentor, Monarch, Cascade, Feniks, Edward, President, Prinz, Snehvide, Cisko, Dukat, Talar) were analysed in terms of their content of furanocoumarins, using GC/MS. In the tissue of the analysed celeriac xanthotoxin, bergapten and isopimpinellin were identified. The largest content of total furanocoumarins was found in the President cultivar (30 mcg/100 g of fresh tissue) and the Luna cultivar (28 mcg/100 g of fresh tissue). The content of xanthotoxin. and bergapten was similar, in all the studies cultivars and ranged: 7.6 and 8.8 mcg/100 g of fresh tissue respectively. Isopimpinellin was found in roots of six cultivars of celeriac: Makar, Brilliant, Monarch, Feniks, President, and Prinz. Total amount of furanocoumarins occurring in the examined cultivars of celeriac does not pose a threat to human health
