Fish breeding is the only economically important type of Serbia aquaculture. Notwithstanding the presence of 12 fish species in fish ponds, it is only the carp (Cyprinus carpio) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) production that is of higher commercial significance. Among the five cyprinid species found in the fish ponds of Serbia, the tench (Tinca tinca) is especially singled out for its meat quality. This species has not been bred in an organized manner for a considerable number of years and, accordingly, it has not been marketed in Serbia. The study presents certain biological, environmental and nutritional characteristics of the species, as well as the potential of intensification of tench production in polyculture.
