A 20-year analysis of sugar beet seed production at the Institute shows a wide variability of yield resulting from the production of seed with or without irrigation. In 2008, a yield of 1.91 t/ha was needed in order to attain germinability of greater than 96%, seed fill of 99%, and absolute seed weight of 10.5 g. Positive correlations (r=0.90) were found between the 20-year seed yield and sowing units and between 2008 seed yield and seed qualitative characteristics.
