The objective of the paper is investigation of possibilities of employment of hilling for propagation of plum vegetative rootstocks, although experience and literature suggest that the method is rarely employed for rootstock propagation. In a mother planting established with the progeny of the selected vegetative plum rootstocks over 1998-2001, the analysis of mother bushes was carried out including the following: number of shootlets per mother bush, number of the rooted shootlets per mother bush, percentage of the rooting of shootlets and the rooting zone height. Climate conditions during hilling are of utmost importance for successful hilling in vegetative rootstock production. As regards the studied period, 2000 was the year with frequent droughts, which affected the rooting of shootlets per mother bush. As a method of vegetative rootstock propagation hilling gave better results in selections originating from Prunus cerasifea Ehrh. in comparison with selections originating from Prunus domestica L.
