Analysis of F1 and F2 populations resulting from cross of curled celery (Apium graveolens convar. secalinum Alef. var crispum Alef.) and turnip-rooted celery (Apium graveolens L. var rapaceum (Mill.) Gaud.)

The aim of the experiments was to create new celery genotypes combining ability to develop edible root, purple petioles and corrugated leaves. Intervarietal celery hybrids were obtained between root v. Cupidon and leaf v. Samurai. Cupidon has low location of lateral roots, short leaf blade, anthocyanin colored petioles and hypocotyl (marker trait). Samurai characterized by corrugated leaves (marker trait), green petioles and dissected leaf blade. Hybridization has been accomplished by natural outcrossing. Hybrid plants with intermediate leaf type, anthocyanin colored petioles and developed edible root were selected within plants grown from seeds collected on leaf celery parent Samurai. F1 hybrids demonstrated superdominance inheritance for plant height and leaf blade length. The total leaf length, petiole length, leaf number per plant, leaf weight, root weight and total plant weight inherited intermediately. F1 plants were more uniform on most morphological traits than both parents. F2 hybrids demonstrated wide variability. The most variable traits were leaf number (V=36,4-58,2%) and edible root weight (24,6-60,6%). The distance between first and second leaflet pairs and root length had middle variation rate (24,6-46,3%). Variation coefficients for other traits were between 14,4-24,8%. Different families had different variability within the single family. Families with good combination of such traits as root weight, leaf number and root index were obtained. A wide variable spectrum of 12 analysed traits allowed to select perspective plants with complex of agronomic valuable characters
