The huchen, Hucho hucho (Linnaeus, 1758) is the largest and most attractive salmonid fish in European waters. It lives only in waterways that belong to the Danube river basin, being one of its endemic species. During the last few decades, because of the various human activities, the natural reproduction of the huchen is experiencing a sudden decline. Due to the overfishing and devastation of habitats and spawning places this species is included into the Red Data Book of European fauna, while in Serbia, the huchen holds a status of a natural rarity. The modern and high-quality protection of the huchen population in Serbian waters, based on the principles of permanent/sustainable development, is secured through the development and improvement of adequate stocking material. With this in mind, a controlled spawning of the huchen was carried out in the trout pond Tresnjica, located at the River Gornja Tresnjica - a natural spawning place of this species, with the result of 12 000 fertilized fish eggs. After the successful incubation of the fish eggs and hatching of the larvae, the huchen juveniles were reared under conditions of the intensive aquaculture during the production period of 9 months, up to the size suitable for stocking of open waters, with a total mortality of 2%. The following waterways were stocked with this stocking materia: Drina, Vapa, Uvac, Lim, Ibar, and Moravica. In the same time, a number of huchen juveniles ( 2 100 individuals), were released into the brooks on the Tara Mt. after being reared in fish pond conditions for 75 days. Huchen juveniles reared for 90 days in these brooks were caught and released into the reservoirs Perucac, Zaovina, and Spajici on the Tara Mt.
